Journey to the World of the Character
The World Yonder
Dr. Jade R. McCutcheon (2013 ) in her book Performance Technologies mentions how in Chekhov's technique, the actor becomes a shaman of sorts, and ancient tribal priest, who, in an altered state of consciousness, travels outside of himself, to make a spiritual journey from home to the land of the gods (p.118).
Question 1
Why would you think this aspect of the training could be important to the performer?
In an Independent Study course with Dr. McCutcheon, during one of the sessions, I was able to travel instead to the world of the character. Dr. McCutcheon, through a guided meditation, facilitated my access to the character's magic world yonder. In there, I was able to feel the world of the character in detail. I was able to describe in vivid detail what that world smelled, tasted, sounded, looked and felt like in my body. That information was essential in embodying my character "Life" in the Winter's Tail by W. Shakespeare.
Question 2
Why are sensual details essential in the process of embodying the character?
Activity
Students
are introduced to their character's yonder world through a meditation
exercise. Then, they begin rehearsing for their final presentations. Those making up, please do the exercise by yourselves and write your reflection on Discussion Board.
